Can dogs eat turkey?

Pute auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, cooked turkey meat without skin, bones or seasoning. Turkey provides lean protein and is found in many dog foods. The skin, bones and raw meat are the problems.

Why turkey is marked yellow

Veterinary-reviewed information from PetMD describes turkey as a healthy occasional snack, but only under certain conditions: fully cooked, without skin, fat or bones, and completely unseasoned. According to the ASPCA, raw meat can contain bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Bones can cause injuries or an obstruction in the digestive tract that requires surgery. According to PetMD, cooked bones splinter even more readily than raw ones. Since only certain parts in a particular form are suitable, turkey is marked yellow.

What to watch for

  • Breast rather than leg: According to PetMD, dark meat from the legs and thighs is much fattier.
  • Remove the skin: Skin and fat can upset the stomach and, over time, contribute to pancreatitis.
  • No stuffing or gravy: A festive roast often comes with garlic, onions, butter and salt.
  • Dispose of bones securely: Put the carcass and leftovers straight into a closed bin.

What if your dog has eaten bones or skin?

According to PetMD, call your vet immediately if your dog has swallowed a bone. After a lot of skin and fat, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, diarrhoea or weakness are warning signs of pancreatitis, according to the Pet Poison Helpline. Call your vet in this case too, and explain what and roughly how much your dog has eaten.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
