How to find the right name for your cat
Cats don't always come when called. They still know their names well, and many respond with an ear twitch, a glance or a short meow. A good cat name is therefore one you enjoy saying often: at feeding time, during play or while giving them a scratch.
Short and pleasing to the ear
One or two syllables are a good choice for cats too. Many respond particularly well to names with bright sounds, such as an i or an ee sound at the end, as in Mimi, Luzi or Felix. Long names are no problem, since a short form usually emerges in everyday life anyway. Maximiliane becomes Maxi, and Sir Archibald becomes Archie. Think beforehand about whether you like the short form.
Avoid sounding too much like other words at home
If you want to teach your cat something, such as jumping down from the table or coming to their carrier, clear, short words help. Their name should sound different. If you have several pets, choose names that sound distinct. Mia and Pia are easily confused in the excitement; Mia and Oskar aren't.
Try calling it
Say the name aloud a few times, as you would when calling your cat indoors in the evening. Does it sound good? Will it suit a clumsy kitten as well as a dignified senior in ten years? Would you be happy saying it at the vet's reception desk? If you nod three times, you have a candidate.
Personality, coat or a favourite story
Some names suggest themselves after a few days. The cat that conquers every box might be a Kleopatra; the male cat that goes head first into everything, a Rocky. Others take their cue from coat colour: Mocca, Karamell or Schneeflocke. Characters from films and books work wonderfully too, from Findus to Garfield. Use the filters above, save your favourites to the shortlist and try the random name picker when you need inspiration.
What the style groups mean
Classic cat names such as Felix, Lilly and Oskar are timeless and easy to say. Modern names sound fresh and international. Funny names bring a smile to everyday life; food and drink names often describe coat colour, from Mocca to Zimt. Nordic names come from Scandinavia and ancient legends. Noble names evoke velvet cushions and thrones, which suit many cats surprisingly well. Names from films and books connect your cat with a story you love. Some names fit two groups and therefore appear under more than one filter.
A pair of names
If two cats arrive together, a matching pair of names can be lovely: characters from the same story, two spices or two stars. Just make sure they sound different enough for both cats to know who you mean.
If your cat already has a name
Rescue cats often arrive with a name. You can keep it or change it. If you change it, say the new name during happy moments, such as feeding or play, and reward every response. A similar-sounding name makes the change easier.
A name for many years
Cats often live to 15 or older. Their name will be with you for a long time, on vaccination records, a bowl and perhaps a portrait on the wall. Take your time choosing, and once you've decided, say it with joy. Your cat will notice.
Common questions about cat names
Do cats recognise their names?
Yes, many cats recognise their names and respond, perhaps with an ear twitch or a glance. Whether they then come over is another question. Linking the name with pleasant experiences such as food or play helps.
How long should a cat's name be?
One or two syllables are practical because they're easy to say often. Longer names are fine as long as they have a nice short form.
Which names work for two cats?
Names that belong together but sound different work well, such as pairs from films, books or nature. Avoid names that differ by just one letter, or neither cat will know who you mean.
How does the search work?
The search looks only at names. Names beginning with what you've entered appear first, followed by names containing it. Uppercase, lowercase and umlauts make no difference: you can also find Björn by typing bjoern or bjorn. Turn on ‘also search meanings’ to search the meanings too. If a name isn't in our list yet, we'll suggest similar-sounding names.
How does the random name picker work?
Tap ‘Pick a random name’. We'll choose from all the names matching your gender, length and style filters. Anything in the search box is ignored. Tap ‘Another one’ to draw the next name straight away.
How does the shortlist work?
Tap the heart beside a name to add it to your shortlist. It's stored only in your browser; we can't see it. Tap a name in the list to remove it.
