How to find the right name for your horse

Choosing a horse's name is often something special. Some horses have a long competition name in their papers alongside a short stable name used every day. This page mainly offers everyday names: names you enjoy saying in the stable aisle, that fit on the stable door and that still make you smile years later.

Stable name and registered name

A horse's registered name is often already set by the breeder and follows the breed society's rules. Some societies specify the first letter, for example. You can still freely choose the stable name. Many riders shorten a long registered name for everyday use: ‘Fürst Friedrich’ becomes ‘Fritzi’. If in doubt, ask your breed society which rules apply to the registered name.

Short for everyday life

Horses also learn their names when spoken regularly and kindly. Short names with one or two syllables are practical in daily life: when bringing them in from the paddock, grooming or lunging. The name should sound clearly different from the words you use when working, such as the German cues ‘Ho’, ‘Steh’ or ‘Brr’. Otherwise, a horse called Bo may hear their name every time you say ‘Ho’.

Try calling it in the stable aisle

Say the name aloud a few times as if calling your horse from the pasture. Does it sound good? Will it suit a playful foal and an experienced riding-school horse? Does it feel right to you on a competition list or embroidered on a headcollar?

Noble, Nordic or with a wink

Horse names can certainly have a little glamour. Noble names suit proud warmbloods, Nordic names suit Icelandic and Fjord horses, and nature names suit hardy leisure companions. Then there are horses that simply have to be called Keks or Krümel. Let colour, personality or breed inspire you. Use the filters above, save names to your shortlist and try the random name picker if you're stuck.

What the style groups mean

Classic names are familiar and uncomplicated; modern ones sound fresh and often English. Noble names suit horses with presence, Nordic names suit hardy horses with thick manes. Nature names evoke weather, landscapes and skies; names from the kitchen and bakery often reflect coat colour, from Karamell to Lebkuchen. Names from films, books and legends connect your horse with a story you love. Many names belong to two groups and appear under more than one filter.

If your horse already has a name

A horse you buy will usually already have a name, often two. You can change the stable name. Say the new name during pleasant moments, such as feeding or grooming, and give your horse a few weeks. A similar-sounding name makes the change easier.

A name for a long partnership

Horses often accompany their humans for twenty years or more. Their name appears on the stable door, saddlecloth, equine passport and perhaps one day on a portrait. Take your time choosing. A name that suits you both becomes part of your shared story.

Common questions about horse names

Can I change my horse's name?

You can change the stable name at any time. The name registered in the papers is subject to the breed society's rules, so ask them if you're unsure.

How long should a horse's name be?

Short everyday names with one or two syllables are practical. Longer, noble names work too; a short form usually emerges at the stable.

What's the difference between a stable name and a registered name?

The registered name appears in the breeding papers and equine passport and follows the breed society's rules. The stable name is what you call your horse in daily life. They can be the same, but don't have to be.

How does the search work?

The search looks only at names. Names beginning with what you've entered appear first, followed by names containing it. Uppercase, lowercase and umlauts make no difference: you can also find Björn by typing bjoern or bjorn. Turn on ‘also search meanings’ to search the meanings too. If a name isn't in our list yet, we'll suggest similar-sounding names.

How does the random name picker work?

Tap ‘Pick a random name’. We'll choose from all the names matching your gender, length and style filters. Anything in the search box is ignored. Tap ‘Another one’ to draw the next name straight away.

How does the shortlist work?

Tap the heart beside a name to add it to your shortlist. It's stored only in your browser; we can't see it. Tap a name in the list to remove it.
