Green: safe
Yes, dogs can eat papaya. According to pet health website PetMD, ripe papaya without the seeds and skin is a safe snack for dogs, provided you stick to a few bites.

Why papaya is fine
Papaya contains no substance described as toxic to dogs. It has no entry in the ASPCA’s plant database, so this assessment relies on PetMD. That source also explains the drawback: papaya is high in fibre. Too much causes stomach pain or soft stools, sometimes even a little if your dog has a sensitive stomach.
What to watch out for
- Ripe only: Keep unripe, hard papaya for yourself or let it ripen.
- Remove the seeds and skin: According to PetMD, both are hard to digest and cause stomach upset.
- Cut it into small pieces: Cubes rather than large wedges help prevent choking.
- Try it slowly: Offer one or two bites first, then see how your dog tolerates them.
- Keep it plain: Dried, sweetened papaya or shop-bought smoothies add unnecessary sugar.
What if your dog eats too much?
Soft stools or wind are the most likely result of a large serving. Give your dog water, monitor them and leave out fruit for a few days. If they have eaten a lot of seeds and skin, vomit repeatedly or have abdominal pain, call your vet.
If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
