Can dogs eat beans?

Bohnen auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Only thoroughly cooked and unseasoned. Raw or undercooked beans contain lectins that irritate the stomach and intestines. Raw kidney beans are considered toxic to dogs.

Why it gets a yellow rating

According to veterinary-reviewed guidance from PetMD, plain cooked beans are fine in moderation for most dogs and provide protein and fibre. Raw beans are another matter. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) describes phytohaemagglutinin, found in beans, as the most toxic lectin in common food plants. EFSA assessed the risks to humans: raw or undercooked pulses can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea. According to PetMD, kidney beans contain particularly high levels.

What to keep in mind

  • Cook until soft: EFSA recommends soaking dried pulses for 6 to 12 hours, changing the water and boiling them vigorously for at least half an hour. Steaming or microwaving is not enough.
  • Green beans: Cook them and break them into pieces so the strings do not get caught in the throat.
  • Avoid prepared dishes: Baked beans, chili and canned beans can contain sugar, salt, seasonings and sometimes garlic.
  • Start slowly: Beans can cause gas. A few pieces mixed into food are enough.

What if your dog has eaten raw beans?

If your dog has eaten raw beans from the pantry or garden, especially kidney beans, call your vet. PetMD gives the same advice. Explain which beans were eaten, roughly how many, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. Vomiting and diarrhoea after eating beans with onions or garlic are also reasons to call.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
