Its ancestors were the hunting dogs of the Khanty and Mansi from the Urals and Siberian forests. The FCI standard requires enthusiasm for feathered and furred game alike. It also gives the West Siberian Laika (Zapadno-Sibirskaïa Laïka) deeper-set eyes than any other Laika breed, with an intense, intelligent expression.

Khanty, Mansi and 1947
The standard says Russian canine experts drafted the first standards for Vogul and Ostyak Laikas, the Mansi and Khanty dogs, in the early 20th century. The closely related lines were united as one breed in 1947, followed by the standard in 1952. Today it is widespread through Russia’s forests from Karelia to Kamchatka. A genetic analysis suggested West Siberian Laikas had been crossed into ancestors of the Finnish Spitz and Jämthund , though only two Laikas were examined (Pohjoismäki et al. 2018).
Eager, sensitive and watchful
The standard calls it calm and balanced, powerful, with a very fine nose and alert, sensitive hunting passion. It meets strangers confidently and watchfully; nervousness towards them is a fault. At home it bonds closely to its people; outdoors it likes working independently.
A short trot, plenty of energy
Movement should be free and energetic, typically a short trot alternating with gallop. Non-hunters provide tracking, dummy work or long hikes in a harness. Do not rely on recall when a fresh trail crosses its path.
Why black is a fault
Unlike the Russian-European Laika , black or black-and-white is a serious fault in the West Siberian; genetically brown, blue, brindle and albino disqualify. Care is simple: brush weekly, daily during moulting. It carries its tightly curled tail over the back or buttocks.
Health: data are lacking
I found no study with reliable disease or lifespan figures for the West Siberian Laika. Neither McMillan et al.’s British analysis nor Kraus et al.’s Finnish lifespan data include it, and it was not among breeds analysed in Sweden’s hip X-ray programme (Engdahl et al. 2026). Ask breeders to show the parents’ hip results, eye examinations and pedigrees.
A companion for
hunters or very active, experienced rural people with time for daily work outdoors.
Not a good choice if
you seek a family dog for short walks, cats or small pets roam your home freely or hunting instincts make you nervous.
The East Siberian Laika is larger and often patched. Does a spitz with so much hunting enthusiasm suit you? The breed quiz helps answer; the book “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German) explores further. The free Puppy Starter Pack makes the beginning easier. Its red or grey coat looks striking as a digital artwork or a poster in a wooden frame .
