Estrela Mountain Dog (Cão da Serra da Estrela)

Serra-da-Estrela-Berghund als Wandbild im Stil Ölgemälde, Raum: cremefarbenes Wohnzimmer

In summer, the Estrela Mountain Dog (Cão da Serra da Estrela) follows the flocks up to 2000 metres. The FCI standard recounts livestock being driven to the Serra da Estrela’s high pastures after the snow melts, as lowland heat has dried the grass. The large dog goes too, the shepherd’s inseparable companion.

FCI Group 2 (Pinscher and Schnauzer, Molossoid and Swiss Mountain Dogs), Section 2.2 Molossoid, Mountain type, Standard No. 173, without working trial
Country of origin Portugal
Size (height at the withers) males 65 to 73 cm, females 62 to 69 cm, tolerance of 2 cm above
Weight males 45 to 60 kg, females 35 to 45 kg
Life expectancy mean life expectancy at birth 7.5 years in Portugal’s pet registry, 3,536 dogs (Geraz et al. 2024)
Coat two varieties: long-haired (straight or slightly wavy, feathered on tail, neck and thighs) and short-haired (uniformly short, without feathering); strong and abundant, like goat hair, with fine, dense, usually paler undercoat
Colours in the standard solid yellow, fawn or grey in all shades, wolf grey, or brindle with black stripes on a fawn, yellow or grey ground; dark mask typical; white only at paw tips and on lower neck and chest

Shepherd dog of the high pastures

According to the standard, the true origin is lost in the distant past; only the status as one of the Iberian Peninsula’s oldest breeds is certain. The FCI definitively recognised the breed on 23.06.1955. The standard names flock guarding, watching and companionship, even draught work. A genomic study estimates around 3,985 dogs for 2025 (Blaschikoff et al. 2026).

Brave towards outsiders, gentle with their own

The standard describes a devoted flock guardian, courageous against attackers and thieves, a wonderful farm and house watchdog, distrustful of strangers and gentle towards their person. Visitors therefore need active introductions, and calm, clear guidance must begin in puppyhood; at 50 kilos, catching up becomes difficult.

Long or short, both keep warm

Brush long coats twice weekly, especially behind ears and around the breeches; short coats once weekly. Both lose plenty of undercoat during shedding.

Let them grow, then exercise

Such a heavy dog takes a long time to grow. Young dogs need calm walks rather than playing to exhaustion. Later, long outings and a large property suit them.

Keep an eye on hips

Among 313 Estrela Mountain Dogs X-rayed in Portugal, 66 percent had hip dysplasia; breeding values improved only after voluntary X-ray screening began in 2004 (Ginja et al. 2009). Ask for both parents’ hip findings. Portugal’s pet registry gave a life expectancy at birth of 7.50 years for 3,536 dogs, compared with 9.48 for crossbreeds (Geraz et al. 2024). Owners reported the breeds themselves; Portuguese figures are generally lower than UK figures.

A dog for farms, pastures and plenty of experience

For experienced, calm people with a house and large fenced property, wanting a gentle giant with a guardian’s soul and budgeting for veterinary costs. Read about a close relative with a short, brindle coat in the entry on the Castro Laboreiro Dog.

Where they become unhappy

In a flat without a garden, with people lacking dog experience and in households with constantly changing guests.

For another large Portuguese guardian, read about the Rafeiro do Alentejo. The breed quiz and, in more detail, our book “Which Dog REALLY Suits You?” (book in German) help you honestly assess whether such a giant suits you. For the first weeks with a puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Put your Estrela on the wall as a magazine cover on canvas; discover more styles among our dog portraits.
