Bolognese

Bologneser als Wandbild im Stil Pop-Art, Raum: grüner Flur

Cosimo de Medici reportedly took eight to Brussels as gifts for Belgian nobles, while Philip II of Spain thanked the giver of two Bolognese as though receiving a treasure. That is the FCI standard’s account. The diplomatic gift has become a quiet, white companion who would rather lie beside you than run ahead.

FCI Group 9 (Companion and Toy Dogs), Section 1 Bichons and related breeds, Standard No. 196, without working trial
Country of origin Italy
Height at the withers Males 27 to 30 cm, females 25 to 28 cm
Weight 2,5 to 4 kg
Life expectancy Median 14,9 years in a British analysis of 584.734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024), but including only 182 Bolognese
Coat Long all over the body, in flocks, standing away rather than flat, shorter on the bridge of the nose
Colours according to the standard Pure white; a very slight ivory tint does not disqualify

A relative of the Maltese

According to the standard, the Bolognese’s origins merge with those of the Maltese. Both descend from the small dogs mentioned by Aristotle. The Romans knew them; later, Titian, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Goya depicted Bolognese. The same FCI section also includes the Bichon Frise (Bichon à poil frisé) and the Little Lion Dog (Petit chien lion).

Calm and loyal

Very calm and generally not very active, enterprising yet quiet, extremely loyal to their people: the standard describes a dog seeking closeness rather than bustle. They adapt well to a quiet routine but dislike spending hours alone.

Little walks with nose work

Daily walks, sniffing tasks and a few tricks keep the dog content. At just 2,5 to 4 kg, they are easy to carry and easily knocked over: supervise larger dogs and boisterous children’s play.

Flocks rather than curls

The standard describes long hair forming flocks, standing away rather than lying flat. To prevent mats, comb right down to the skin several times weekly. Wipe around eyes and muzzle daily and keep an eye on nails.

Long life and an eye gene

The 182 Bolognese in McMillan and colleagues’ analysis reached a median of 14,9 years, compared with 12,0 for crossbreeds, but only 32 had died, so the figure is provisional. An inherited cause of retinal degeneration is known: in a genetic-testing study of over 100.000 dogs, one of 14 Bolognese carried the progressive rod-cone degeneration variant, prcd-PRA. Of two Finnish Bolognese diagnosed with PRA, one carried two copies (Donner et al. 2018). Among 16 tested in Italy, one carrier was found (Ghilardi et al. 2023). Ask for the parents’ prcd tests and eye examinations.

Who the Bolognese suits

Quiet households, first-time owners and older people seeking an affectionate companion, who enjoy regular grooming.

Who is the breed less suited to?

Sporty people seeking a running partner, and anyone uninterested in brush and comb. The white coat does not forgive a forgotten week.

To see whether such a calm little dog fits your everyday life, try the breed quiz, with greater detail in our book “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). If a puppy is joining you, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. And if your Bolognese is already here, they make an attractive poster in a wooden frame, with more ideas among our dog portraits.
