Can dogs eat linseed?

Leinsamen auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only in small amounts added to food. Linseed is an ingredient in some dog foods. However, the seeds contain compounds that can release hydrogen cyanide.

Why linseed is marked yellow

The sources disagree to some extent here. PetMD praises linseed as a source of fibre, protein and fatty acids and suggests mixing chopped or ground seeds or a little linseed oil into food. The Pet Poison Helpline, however, warns that flax seeds and stems contain cyanogenic compounds. When they are chewed or crushed, hydrogen cyanide can be released. According to the Pet Poison Helpline, livestock are most often affected. Cold-pressed linseed oil, on the other hand, does not cause cyanide poisoning.

What to watch for

  • An addition, not a treat: A pinch mixed into food is very different from a handful straight from the bag.
  • Linseed oil as an alternative: Cold-pressed oil does not contain the cyanide precursors. According to PetMD, it quickly turns rancid after opening, so keep it cool and use it promptly.
  • Store supplies safely: Bags of linseed, muesli and seeded bread belong in the cupboard.
  • Ask first: PetMD recommends discussing linseed with your vet.

What if your dog has raided the bag?

Call your vet and explain roughly how much is missing, whether the seeds were whole or crushed, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. According to the Pet Poison Helpline, vomiting, drooling, gasping for air or weakness are signs of cyanide poisoning. Seek emergency veterinary care immediately if these occur.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
