Can dogs eat kiwi?

Green: safe

Yes, dogs can eat kiwi. The ASPCA specifically includes kiwi among the fruits you can give your dog, cut into small pieces and peeled.

Why kiwi is fine

Kiwi contains no substance known to be toxic to dogs. Although it has no specific entry in the ASPCA’s plant database, it appears on the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s list of safe snacks. A few slices offer a bit of variety, nothing more.

What to watch out for

  • Never serve it whole: A whole kiwi is just the right size for a large dog to swallow in one bite. According to the American Kennel Club, it can then get stuck in the throat.
  • Peel it: The skin is not toxic, but it is tough and rich in fibre. It can easily upset the stomach.
  • A little at a time: Kiwi contains a lot of insoluble fibre. Too much can cause diarrhoea, especially in sensitive dogs.
  • No substitute for food: Your dog has different needs from yours. Kiwi is a treat, rather than a vitamin supplement for their bowl.

What if your dog eats too much, or a whole kiwi?

If your dog gags, coughs severely or has trouble breathing after swallowing a whole kiwi, it is an emergency. Go straight to the vet. If they have simply eaten a few too many pieces, their stools may become soft. Offer water and keep an eye on them. Call if diarrhoea persists or they vomit.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
