Can dogs eat garlic?

Red: toxic

No, garlic is toxic to dogs. The ASPCA lists it as toxic to dogs in its plant database. Like onions, leeks and chives, it belongs to the allium family.

Why garlic is dangerous

According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, allium species contain sulphur compounds released during cutting, cooking and chewing. These damage red blood cells and cause anaemia. Garlic is three to five times more potent than onion. Raw, cooked and especially concentrated forms such as granules, powder or dried soups are dangerous. According to Pet Poison Helpline, Japanese breeds such as Akitas and Shiba Inus are more sensitive.

What signs should you look for?

Vomiting is often the first sign. According to MSD, red blood cell destruction usually becomes apparent only three to five days later: lethargy, loss of appetite, rapid breathing, a racing heart, weakness, yellowish gums and dark reddish urine. The ASPCA also lists panting and blood in the urine.

What to keep in mind

  • Do not give leftovers containing garlic: pizza, garlic bread, sauces, sausages and ready meals.
  • Do not give garlic as a home remedy for ticks or fleas.
  • Keep the spice rack and shopping bags out of reach.

What if your dog has eaten garlic?

Call your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately, even if your dog still seems bright. Be ready to explain what was eaten (fresh garlic, powder or a dish), roughly how much, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. Do not give home remedies or induce vomiting yourself.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
