Rice and potatoes in dog food: how to account for extras

Long-haired Dachshund sitting in front of a green food bowl with a plant pattern, filled with dry food

A spoonful of rice may seem harmless, but even a small addition provides energy. Soft-cooked rice or potatoes can occasionally suit a healthy adult dog as an extra. They should not replace a large share of complete food.

Ask three questions: Is this addition suitable? How much energy does it provide? And how much room is left after treats?

What can go in the bowl?

Prepare a small portion separately: cook rice until soft, peel potatoes and cook them thoroughly, then let them cool. Serve plain. Fried potatoes, chips, seasoned rice and buttery mash are unsuitable. Never offer raw or green potatoes. The American Kennel Club explains the risks with veterinary input. AKC.

Watch for onions, garlic and leeks in sauces, stocks and leftovers: they are toxic to dogs. Being left over from lunch is no safety check. WSAVA explains unsuitable ingredients and limits for extras. WSAVA.

Extras remain extras

WSAVA recommends keeping treats and other extras below ten percent of daily calories. Human foods count too. This limit applies to everything combined, not to rice and rewards separately.

This is an upper limit for guidance, not a daily target. A dog that enjoys its complete food needs no extra rice. You can set aside part of the weighed daily ration for training.

Rice is not automatically a poor dog-food ingredient. Tufts veterinary school explains that dogs generally use nutrients from grains well. The whole diet matters; adding rice does not automatically improve or complete it. Tufts.

Why reducing food is not the whole answer

When you regularly add a side portion, include its energy in the daily total. Always feeding it on top may contribute to weight gain.

A calorie calculation cannot confirm complete nutrient provision. Less complete food also means fewer nutrients from that food. A large portion of rice or potatoes does not replace them appropriately. The effect depends on the original diet.

Chicken and rice is not a complete long-term diet either. Tufts explains the limitations of such bland diets. If home-cooked ingredients replace a larger share, have the whole ration professionally formulated. Tufts.

A worked example with room for rewards

Suppose 1,000 kcal a day has been established as appropriate for a dog. An addition supplies an estimated 60 kcal and treats another 20 kcal. Together that is 80 kcal, or eight percent, leaving 920 kcal for the main food.

The following energy densities are hypothetical examples, not figures for a particular product:

  • Dry food at 380 kcal per 100 g: 920 ÷ 380 × 100 = about 242 g.
  • Wet food at 100 kcal per 100 g: 920 ÷ 100 × 100 = 920 g.

General formula: grams of main food = remaining kcal ÷ kcal per 100 g × 100.

The 1,000 kcal is not a recommendation for every dog of a given weight. Needs and portions vary. The addition's 60 kcal is also an example assumption, not a fixed serving of rice.

Weighed cooked or dry?

Rice absorbs water during cooking. You cannot combine a cooked portion's weight with the calorie value for dry rice. Record whether you weighed it before or after cooking and use matching information.

Food tables offer guidance, not an exact measure of the energy your individual dog obtains from that preparation. Avoid treating estimates as perfectly precise rations.

How our calculator helps

Our free calculator accepts weight, body condition, activity and food energy. Dry and wet food options include additions. For rice and potatoes, you can select whether they were weighed cooked or raw. Raw weight describes when you weighed them; it does not mean you should feed raw potatoes. Dog food calculator.

Treats and chews are entered separately. Explicitly select No if your dog gets none; otherwise enter quantities as accurately as possible. The calculator accounts for estimated energy from additions when calculating main-food grams.

The result is a starting point. Neither a gram figure nor a brief supplement message confirms that a homemade ration is balanced. Monitor weight, body condition and tolerance; consult your vet about health questions.

Our short German-language video about including treats in daily food calculations explains why rewards count. Its portion and snack figures are examples, not universal amounts. Apply the same principle to rice and potatoes: count their energy rather than simply adding them. Video in German.

Weigh instead of guessing a small handful

Put the empty bowl on kitchen scales and press tare. Weigh the main food, reset to zero and weigh the addition separately. Set aside training food too, so it does not disappear from the calculation.

Existing suitable kitchen scales will usually do. If you need some, the Soehnle Page Compact 300 Slate is an option for normal food portions: tare, a display in 1 g increments and a 5 kg capacity including the bowl. The manufacturer confirms these specifications for the Slate version, item 61515. Soehnle.

Place the glass surface on a firm, level base and clean as instructed. These scales are not dishwasher-safe. Ordinary kitchen scales are unsuitable for dosing very small quantities of medicines or supplements.

When to ask first

For puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, illness, intolerances and veterinary-prescribed diets, ask your vet which additions are appropriate. Also seek advice for weight loss or regularly replacing larger parts of meals with home-cooked food.

For everyday use: choose a suitable addition, record the cooked portion correctly, total all extras and adjust the main food accordingly. If unsure, have the ration assessed instead of adding more ingredients or powders.
